Frequently Asked Questions
Do you sell complete kits? No, we recommend which grass varieties are suitable for growing in trays and indoors but do not sell the trays.
Trays are readily available from garden centres, Sainsburys and Ebay. Seed trays are usually too wide to fit exactly onto window sills so we use yoghurt pots and other recycled plastic containers. We do sell a Brilliant Brick! of compressed compost that 'expands' into 8-10 litres of compost when 3 litres of water is added.
How do I know if my soil is right for your seeds? Either take a look at what is growing in the garden already or just purchase some trial sizes to begin with.
I want to sow a patch of grass for my guineas, which type is best? Nutritionally the Orchard and Timothy are equally as good, but growing wise we prefer to sow a mixture of seeds, so if one variety fails/doesn't do well we will have chosen a mixture where the the other variety should do well.
Can grass and herbage be fed ad lib All herbage has different properties and should be fed as a treat with grass and/hay. Prior to the meal feed some hay, this will ensure the gut is moving well. Introduce new herbage gradually and stop feeding at the first sign in a change in droppings.
Once guinea is used to eating grass he can be fed it ad lib. Orchard and Timothy are the best ones because they are not rich like the Rye grasses which are designed to enhance milk production in cattle.
When can guinea go on the new grass Ideally plant in year one and do not graze until year two, though cutting with scissors is fine. However, we find a little light grazing once the grass is established for 3-4 months is OK, (based on a Forage and Hide Patch).
Remember that guineas should only be on new grass for a short amount of time eg 20 minutes for the first wheek or so, or a large number of guineas can be put into a small run for a longer time, that way each guinea gets less to eat.
Can my rabbit eat the grass/herbage grown from your seeds? Planet Guinea have only done research on nutrition for guineas.
I want to buy some wildflower varieties, can you order them for me? Some wildflowers are extremely expensive and not always easy to grow- we've tried! So we cannot recommend them but if you wish order a minimum amount please contact us and we may be able to help.
Can you order me herbs/veggie seeds Planet Guinea only supplies Grass and herbage, there are other websites (Amazon etc) and garden centres who have herbs and vegetable seeds readily available.
We found growing herbs and vegetables too much like hard work and it was much easier to buy them. We may be able to order them in but you would need to buy the minimum amount so that we are not left with seeds we cannot sell.
How much seed do I sow? All our seeds come with our own hints and tips based on our experience of growing these seeds. If you do not find what you need on these we aim to answer emails within 24 hours of you sending (or try again).
