Planet Guinea Grasses

This section includes grasses such as Timothy and Orchard and any guinea friendly mixes we are currently stocking. These grasses are recommended for planting in guinea pig gardens to recreate an environment close to one they would have in the wild. Guinea pigs are designed for grazing and their digestive systems and teeth require a high fibre diet with hay and grass being top of the list due to promoting the correct side to side chewing action that wears down the teeth correctly. For using to graze on we recommend leaving for 12 months to establish itself. During the twelve months the grass can be hand picked/ cut with scissors (we use wallpaper scissors), and fed. There are some varieties that are better suited to guineas than others. For example Rye Grass which is high in Protein is commonly used for cattle being farmed for beef or dairy but is comparably rich for guinea pigs. On Planet Guinea we grow Orchard and Timothy grass mixes, some of which contain Fescues and other varieties of grass. Timothy and Orchard is also available to buy on its own. Both these grasses have the Ca:Ph rate that is desirable for guinea pigs (this varies from season to season due to the conditions it is grown in).
